Abstract
Differences in using communicative gestures is one of the determining factors of autism spectrum disorder in early period. The purpose of this study was to compare the communicative gestures of toddlers who are at risk autism spectrum disorder with developmental language delay and typical development toddlers. Participants were toddlers who were identified as a at-risk autism spectrum disorder (ASD, n=13), developmental language delay (DLD, n=13), and typical development (TD, n=13). The participants¡¯ age ranged from 18 to 30 months and did not differ across the groups. Behavior samples were collected through CSBS DP procedure (4 sampling opportunities and free play for five minutes) and analyzed with a specific coding scheme consisted of deictic, representational, and conventional gesture. Results showed the following: (a) ASD group revealed significantly less frequency in the total number of gesture than TD and DLD groups. (b) In terms of gesture types, ASD group showed significantly less frequencies in deictic and conventional gestures than TD group and there was not significant group difference in representational gesture. (c) ASD and DLD groups showed significantly less showing and shaking heads gestures than TD group and only ASD group significantly less than TD group in pointing gesture. We discussed that implication of communicative gestures on early screening of autism spectrum disorders based on the results of this study.
